Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection of a woman’s reproductive organs and is mostly caused by infections such as Chlamydia Trachomatis , Bacteria Vaginosis, Syphilis and Gonococcal infection, Chronic Candidiasis/Yeast infection. PID is the chief cause of fallopian tubal blockage in women which is a major cause of infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
  • PID may not cause symptoms or may present with mild symptoms like abnormal bleeding, discharge and most common symptom of PID is lower abdominal pain which usually worsen during intercourse , bowel motion or urination . In some women PID causes long standing fever. PID is diagnosed through the approach of abdomino-pelvic ultrasound scan which indicates accumulation of significant fluid in the Pouch of Douglas .
